With Herzliya airport scheduled to shut down in the near future, an alternative for civil aviation was contemplated in Hadera. But with the usual NIMBY issues, that is hitting some hurdles, and now comes news of the plans moving to Haifa, where residents might actually welcome an expansion of the local airport.

That one is a much tougher battle. It's about an international airport.

Haifa proposed expansion is mostly about Civil Aviation and domestic air travel, though it has served routes to Cyprus IINM and depending on the type of expansion might be able to serve short-haul international routes.

Living here in Haifa, I can tell you there is mostly strong support for this. People hate having to go to TLV. Before Corona there were flights to Eilat, Cyprus, and Athens and people were ecstatic! We very much want to see it get expanded.

Why would anyone in the Haifa area want to schlep to TLV for a flight they can take locally from a small non-congested airport?

Thats a true point but it doesn't answer my question. Maybe someone in Tel Aviv would want to take a train up north for a cheaper flight in a smaller non-congested airport.

This is not the peoples opinions....They have had polls here and the overwhelming majority have said YES to more flights and growing this to a real airport. Any normal country would have made an airport here already.

Are they talking about expanding the runway? A single 4,300 ft runway is really limited with what it could accommodate commercially.

I am not so sure that moving the Herzliya airport activity to Haifa is what people want. Herzliya airport was/is used for light aircraft, flight school, pesticide sprayers, etc. Nothing commercial.

Makes sense considering their runway was shorter than 3k feet.
