Laptop crashing Wi-Fi connection
« on: October 12, 2021, 04:20:48 PM »
Can someone help?! My modem restarts literally every ten minutes but only seems to do so after I put my laptop on. If it is off all seems fine. As soon as I put my laptop on, my modem restarts so everything gets knocked off for 3-5 minutes. It's a Lenovo Ideapad 5 .Comcast/Xfinity already replaced the modem twice and came out 3 times. Problem doesn't seem to be on their end.

Known issue with Lenovo devices using Qualcomm Atheros WiFi chips.  Try getting a newer wifi driver or replacing the WLAN card with an Intel card (a good one is about $20 on eBay).

Thanks. Link a little bit too on the techy side for me but I'm looking into it, will try some of the suggestions in those comments.

It's a known issue that it doesn't detect the wifi and/or cannot connect to it or that it SHUTS down (restarts) the modem and nothing can then connect to the wifi? I tried calling B&H where I purchased it, the guy said he never heard of this b4 (although a google search shows otherwise). Can you provide a link for the issue you reference?

It kicks off the rest of the devices off the network temporarily. It doesn't turn off the modem or router.

In my case, the modem/router is restarting.

You still think to replace the WLAN card?

If it's easily accessible then it is very easy to do so.

That was gonna be my next question. I have no idea how to get a new wifi driver or change the WLAN card 😉 But I can probably figure it out by searching online...

Question is if it should be changed, if that is likely the real issue....
When I asked on a local chat, everyone was blaming it on the internet provider, seems it's been horrible here.

I would add- I had this laptop for almost a year with no issues at all. Then this began...

New driver is as simple as putting the model of your laptop online and searching for the right driver.

Thanks. When you say the "right driver", I assume you mean just to download the driver, in my case from the Lenovo website? Although my computer automatically receives updates, wouldn't it have an up to date driver already?

Not necessarily. Check here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/

Put in your model and see if there is a newer WiFi driver available.

Thanks so much. I followed that link. Strange, I did the automatic scan and it came up with a critical BIOS update that seems like it was due back in August (based on posts from other forums). Strange thing is, I thought that installed 2 days ago when I did the same scan. Seems it didn't download fully. My Lenovo Vantage is set to automatically install updates, just double checked.... so Idk why it never installed.

It did not recommend any wifi driver updates but when I checked manually, I got a result back for a WLAN driver (Realtek, Intel) released in January '21. I downloaded it. Hopefully that helps!

Good luck. Report back, please. Either way, doesn't seem like you have a Qualcomm chipset.

I got excited too quickly  :( Within a few minutes, the router/modem restarted once again. It is so frustrating.

Basically, get a new router is what I come out with after reading this. I have no idea what they're talking to about Wireshark. I don't have a spare laptop either way. Strange thing is, it's the 2nd router my provider switched out already and same issue....
