Here's the article.

In short: Decades ago, the public was not aware much about politics, so one or two askanim in each community would meet the candidates and recommend someone based on their stances.

Now, two things have changed. 1. Askanim started "making deals" with politicians to "sell" the community's support, rather than simply make a recommendation. 2. The public has become much more knowledgeable about candidates and their positions.

So, rather than just blindly give an endorsement and lead to people questioning (and disregarding) the askanim and the rabbonim who back them, in today's day and age, there has to be complete transparency behind every endorsement, and a detailed explanation as to WHY an endorsement was given.

I don't see my vote from this year's general election, but I assume it's because I voted in person and it was not certified yet. But looking back, I am proud to say that I voted in the general election every year for the last decade, and in the primary all years besides three.

All this talk about the Vaad is ignoring the fact that this has been going on for YEARS. Christie also won Lakewood in a landslide despite the Vaad endorsement against him. That wasn't even the first time. We heard all of the exact same discussions then as now. More transparency, expanding their membership, etc. Yet the most there has been was a few token changes. It is unlikely that anyone is disturbed by this result in the slightest just like they never were in the past.

Punkt fakert. Everybody I know was embarrassed to say they voted for Murphy, which likely contributed to many people staying home.

The number one item of import is showing that we are engaged and we vote (and a close second is appearing to vote as a team). This was a disgrace.

The thing is that Frum yidden are not just worried about people knowing who they voted for individually, but who people will see that the community voted for. Someone might not vote for a specific candidate because they feel a sense of responsibility to not be part of showing that Frum Jews voted for x.
