I had to cancel United tickets due to travel ban - Amex Travel
« on: October 27, 2021, 11:12:07 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am running the marathon next week in New York and I wanted to bring my family to support me from France.

Unfortunately, the travel ban has been extended until November 8 so I had to cancel my tickets for them.

I booked United Business Class tickets through Amex Travel with MR points.

At this point, United is offering ETC credits for the next 12 months.

I don't think that's fair considering that I can't fly because of the travel ban.

Any thoughts on what I can do here?

Thank you for your help as always :)

You can easily sell those ETCs for cash (at a discount, though)

ETC is valid for 24 months and can be extended further.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Welcome to the lives of half the Jewish people for the past year wanting to visit Israel and the ban continually getting extended (and opening cancelled hours / days after announced).

Airlines doesn’t ask, know or care who you bought the ticket for or what their eligibility to travel is. That’s all on you if you end up not being able to use it (and don’t want to keep airline credit).

Ticket was booked as completely nonrefundable?
If you don’t want to keep the credit, and are okay taking a loss (but just don’t want to deal with selling it), you should have an option to refund minus $400 pp fee (special refund policy for UA travel agency bookings until 12/31).
