The process is for owner of reservation to call United. They will ask for PP's owner Account number and answers to account security questions (so best to have the PP account owner on the phone at the same time - incorrect answers will lock the PP owner's account).

whats stopping some Indian employee at a call center in the Philippines from jotting down your information and selling/using it elsewhere?

That is why you should generally only transact with people who have somewhat of a history on the forums. While this isn't a perfect answer, that has been my general rule and thus far it has worked.
