mezuza checking
« on: November 09, 2021, 11:52:18 AM »
Is it a bad idea to check my own mezuzos? I can't imagine it is too hard, I know the basics of what I'm looking for,  if I'm not sure I'll send a pic to sofer.

I thought this was a new type of rewards checking account and got excited.  :-[
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

It's not as easy as it sounds, have you been properly trained to check mezuzos? Do you realize how easy it is to overlook a missing word?
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Why would the Sofer give you a decision based on a picture when it's (part of) his livelihood to check the klaff directly in proper lighting for Kashrus?

Or an extra/missing letter with מלא/חסר?

I think any sofer would give you an answer if you ask him a shaila. If the mezuza is pasul, he would probably buy a new one from that sofer (assuming the sofer has any available).

Would think they would tell you they need to see it in person to be sure, but what do I know.

Se PT YD 291:3 from Chasam Sofer that this is not a part of the twice every seven year bedika and that this bedika can be done by anyone.

i am not a proffesional magia(checker) but as a sofer i would assume that if the mezuzah was good in the first place and you trust whoever checked it when it was first bought  then theoretically someone with basic yeshiva knowledge should be able to tell if something got damaged and then show it to a rav.The big problem i see with it is how are you going to properly rewrap the mezuzah and return it safely without a-damaging it and b-leaving it exposed to moisture.thats where you are going to need a professional.while its really no big deal for someone who learned how to do it,once you bring it to someone you"ll probably get him to check it as well

Main problem you'll have is (taking it out and) returning it back in the case

I understood that he says that this (by yourself) is how the required bedika can be done.
Especially in light if the the 2 reasons why one is checking brought in shiyurei Bracha on bottom of the page

I don't believe it's a big deal for indoor mezuzahs. Use some polyethylene food wrap, twist the edges and push it in.

The required bedika twice in 7 years could be done by yourself without bringing it to a sofer
כל אדם יכול לבדקן
And there are 2 reasons for checking: that it wasn't stolen and that it didn't get ruined. Both of these things can be checked by anyone
