Maybe I知 miss understanding how it works. Based on my research if you want to open your docs in word or spreadsheets in excel you need to have the Microsoft Apps. I知 under the impression that a paid version of 365 will give you access to these apps. Am I wrong?

..but if you want to open them in google docs or office online, then nothing needs to be installed.

Google sheets or docs does not depend on Microsoft, you can even get 3rd party open source programs to work them offline like https://www.libreoffice.org/
But if you want to feel at home you'll want Microsoft office
