Qantas charging $700 a flight besides 63k points

I tried booking an AA ticket to Israel Feb 20-24 with my qantas points. They wanted $689 PLUS 63,000 points. The message at checkout reads as follows *  The card payment amount comprises taxes, fees and USD $598.00 for carrier charges that you must pay, in addition to the points required for the Classic Reward.*
 Last time I used them the fee wasn't near as much When did this happen? Are there other dates or airlines that the fee wouldn't be as much.

I want to book an award flight from the US to Venice, I see that Qantas has availabilty with AA direct for 50k round trip, I can not see how much I will need to pay for the taxes and fees... only once I tranfer my points to Qantas and checkout, does anyone know how much the taxes and fees are for such a flight?
