This map begs for some questions to be asked, such as why do Michigan and Indiana observe Eastern time?

Idaho, the Dakotas (and possibly Montana) should also probably move over one time zone to the west.

And why aren't timezones drawn diagonally?

Mostly based on where they want to be in the same time zone as from a business sense.

Let's go make a map with your suggested changes and let's see what it's like
And watch how easy it will be to pick it apart.  :)
