But in all honesty I don't think anyone can compare Czarist Russia, especially pre 1860, to Soviet Russia, or to today's Russia.

And in all of those regimes, as much as they might have harbored antisemitism, the real trouble came from the Jews. Whether it was Avigdor in the times of the A"R, the Maskilim in the times of the Tzemach Tzedek, or the Yevsektzia in Soviet times.

The use of the word friend is not really great. All it means is that he keeps cordial relations and does not persecute them.

It begs the question what is this "very good friend" getting in return.

More than that. He has done good things for them, including greatly reducing antisemitism in the country.

it doesnt sound pretty to someone who has been mostly care free (religious prosecution-wise) for the past 2000 years, but thats what it is.

that doesnt mean we approve of other actions of his, (even if sometimes we may have to pay him lip service in order to keep up the "friendship"), but it definitely means we are grateful for any such friends that we can find
