1 - Mexico had recently gotten out of the oppression of the US.
2 - The US installed a puppet government in Mexico.
3 - The US had recently decided to take a chunk of Mexico for ourselves.

One thing this thought experiment does show is that US politicians and pundits, on both sides of the aisle, know nothing about Russia, and the motivations of the typical Russian.

Here his response would have been much worse, for numerous reasons.

A. Trump's personal conspiracy theories and self centeredness.
B. His chumminess with Russia and willingness to give them a free pass.
C. If he was afraid to respond to Iran who attacked US troops (and would have resulted in much more deaths, had not Israel warned them of the impending strike), and which the US could easily overcome, then just imagine Trump being afraid to get involved in a war with Russia, essentially a superpower, over Ukraine, which is just an ally, and we all know that Trump doesn't care about anyone but the US or himself (with the exception of Israel, for whatever reason that may have been).
