Topic Wiki

I created an account to say this

I am a survivor of abuse

I tried to type up a longer, more detailed post but it got too hard. The bottom line is the following

There's no such thing as universal feelings, reactions, desires, needs that all victims share. Each one is an individual who suffered alone and carries the unique scars that stay with them and each one will react to future situations in life in their own way.

Therefore, there is no single response to abuse that will leave all victims feeling safe, secure, validated, supported, closure and everything else all the well meaning people here want to give them.

However, I think there is a single response that would leave all victims feeling further pain and trauma and that is "It can't be."

Unless I hear Daas Torah saying not to read his book, I will continue to keep them/buy them. They are great books, and unless there is a reason not to have them, I have no issue with my kids reading them (as long as they don't know anything about the author).

I doubt that he is considered daas torah, but he’s definitely aomeone who unfortunately has tons of experience with these sort of things, and on a personal level i agree with what he says.

So 2 days ago his books were fine ?
Any survivor seeing them wouldn’t have suffered again ?
I believe he was referring to long-term once there was an ending to the story but due to the fact that he took his own life they will never be an ending to his story. Because if everything was cleared up and he was found to have not committed any of these things why would a survivor be traumatized by seeing his name?

Not that they were fine but that there would have been a possibility of CW clearing his name. Today that is no longer a possibility and as such, regardless of the veracity of the allegations, his name - and by extension his books - will forever be associated with abuse and will forever cause harm to survivors.

What about if they find out about the author later in life?

Can someone post what it says for those who dont have access?

This is only a portion of what he said, but it's the part directly relevant to this part of the conversation: (Paraphrasing from memory)

By taking his own life, Chaim Walder's name is inextricably linked to sexual abuse. Had he not taken his life, he could have either cleared his name or apologized in some way. But now that he can't clear his name, all his books must be destroyed as survivors of abuse will without a doubt be harmed by seeing his name on a book prominently placed on your shelf. Whether or not he did it is now irrelevant, his name is linked with abuse and survivors WILL be traumatized and his books must be "wiped off the face of the earth".

How do you “clear your name” of such charges ? How do you prove to the world that you didn’t commit these crimes 10-20 years ago ?

If it's an isolated incident it's possible to be cleared.
With dozens of cases your name won't be cleared, but perhaps you can do sincere teshuva and people will see that.

I guess you can start with the ones from the last 12-24 months.

Another thought that came to mind is that every therapist, clergyman, teacher, etc. should have signs that are visible from any direction quoting the mishna and reminding that "עין רואה, ואוזן שומע וכל מעשיך בספר נכתבים" and there should be video and audio recording of all meetings that should be handed to the client/patient etc. After every encounter.
And females should (almost) always see female therapists. Especially for long term therapy.

In a court of law, perhaps. (Very risky)
But not to the public. Once your name & face are plastered everywhere people will forever think of you as a monster.

Depends if there's proof. People are generally willing to give the benefit of the doubt when it's a seemingly isolated incident.
But when the floodgates open, it's over.

For those who did remove his books from your home (either now or weeks ago) -

Did you just remove them and hope your kids don't notice? How do you plan on 'answering' when your children ask where those books are?

Did you explain what were doing to your children? What did you say?

Please include gender and age range of child/ren if possible.

But can't we wait one week and just be silent? Just let ourselves as a society process and get over the shock without having to drew lines and defend positions? Just let the poor family grieve quietly? Let them try to begin to comprehend what will either way be a devastating tragedy that will terribly impact their lives forever?

Why must we immediately delve into the "true or false" of it where basically none of us has any clue what really did or didn't happen?

Think you got it backwards. The ruckus is coming from those painting his death as murder. That requires an immediate response to support the victims. I haven't (yet) seen anyone gloating about his death or saying he deserved to die.
