Topic Wiki

I created an account to say this

I am a survivor of abuse

I tried to type up a longer, more detailed post but it got too hard. The bottom line is the following

There's no such thing as universal feelings, reactions, desires, needs that all victims share. Each one is an individual who suffered alone and carries the unique scars that stay with them and each one will react to future situations in life in their own way.

Therefore, there is no single response to abuse that will leave all victims feeling safe, secure, validated, supported, closure and everything else all the well meaning people here want to give them.

However, I think there is a single response that would leave all victims feeling further pain and trauma and that is "It can't be."

As Rabbi Berkovits says in the video mentioned above, there are already plenty of Batei Din who are professionally experienced in these matters.
That’s precisely the problem! There has to be only one universally accepted beis din in every community. Too many leaves room for lots of problems. People will say how come the better/other beis din didn’t get involved and may assume it to be not credible.

Maybe, but it would first need to get reported to the beis din
That’s a problem no matter what happens… takes time for victims to open up. There may be organizations to help with this, but that’s a different issue.

That part is not the issue I am referring to. I am referring to getting an actual accusation in front of that beis din.

It became so cool to write the most hateful things possible about CW. It's almost a competition. Of course, it's all in the name of the G-D....
Can you give some examples f things you are considering "hateful" other than the yemach shmo?

Once a victim opens up, is it that hard to get them to that beis din?

Did you read it?
To name a few...

"the vicious, pernicious, and malicious monster whose name I shall not utter"

"I will no longer give this evil, demonic maniac the "honor" of upper-case letters; rather, he is lower-cased to cw."

"The freakish pedophilic foe"

C'mon, grow up... You can write an opinion without all the "sensation".

It's difficult enough to find a Beis Din that people trust as fair and unbiased for choshen mishpat issues, imagine trying to set one up that will be empathetic and compassionate enough for the most traumatized children to trust, and in every community, nach?

There are many reasons why many rabonim have ruled it necessary to go to medical professionals and law enforcement.

If they have clear guidelines then yes. If not, then we are left with the issues I listed.

Let's say you're right, and it's way over the top and unnecessary. Which would be more harmful to someone who was abused by someone like cw, reading about him as a evil demon, or a guy who let his yetzer hora overcome him, nebach, much like I gave in to my yetzer hora and ate too much ice cream and was too mean to someone on DDF?

Why are people so much more concerned about the way we speak about the accused and not the way hundreds of abuse victims have to read about our blase attitude to their suffering?

All they need to do is contact the beis din or someone in charge to deal with this.

There are many reasons why many rabonim have ruled it necessary to go to medical professionals and law enforcement.
If there is only one competent beis din setup by the community the distrust won’t happen in the first place, it only happens with many different batei dinim sticking their nose in (justified or not..).
Going to medical professionals and law enforcement is not a contradiction to getting the community beis din involved.

This isn't happening in large multi-faceted communities anytime soon so lets work on plan b.
