Fraud on Two Different Credit Cards
« on: December 31, 2021, 12:03:48 AM »
Anyone ever have fraud on two different cards from different issuers at the same time? Just discovered multiple fraudulent charges that are listed as PAYPAL on two cards. None of the cards are actually linked to my PAYPAL account, though. Other than shutting down the cards what other steps should I be taking?

These two cards linked to any other account?
PC/smartphone might be compromised.

Business computer was hacked last week. Fraud started in the middle of November. Good point to check if both cards had been used on the same site....

Cards not used on business computer. Server hacked and encrypted, no ransom request... All other cards seem clean,B"H.

Oy, I hope you and the business aren’t suffering to much, hopefully had ironclad backups

The no ransom request sounds weird, especially with encrypting:
1. Isn’t the whole point of encrypting to demand a random?
2. If the point was to steal financial info, isn’t it better not to encrypt so there’s less chances anyone knows you got in?

I’m starting to think the hack is unrelated to the fraud, though the two-cards thing sounds mysterious

Yesterday someone requested a new card for my capital one, chase, and citi card to an address somwhere in Massachusetts. Anyone have any ideas for me as to what I should be doing now. I already spoke with these 3 cards and are having them replaced, but I have many more cc's; mostly chase and amex's. I also have the address of the guy that requested the cards, is there anything I can do with that info. TIA

File a police report

It boggles my mind that this is where fraud like this ends, with a police report.

That would be my perception/experience. It’s seen as a negligible crime with too few resources to pursue it. Someone went to a T-mobile store across the country and walked out with two iPhones that were added as lines to my account, they supposedly showed photoID with my name on it, AFAIK nothing was ever done other than a police report files and an “investigation” internally at T-mobile that went nowhere.

Did Apple brick the phones?

No idea. They retroactively removed the phones installment plans and lines from my account as if it had never happened.

It should go without saying but change all passwords on the accounts and make sure they are all different.

Yup, set the chase one to "ChasePassword" and amex to "AmexPassword"

I do the opposite in case the thief thinks he is smart.
