Is Omicron different?
« on: January 02, 2022, 01:13:00 PM »
To continue the conversation in other threads.

South Africa data shows a 20-25x reduction in severe outcomes, however there are counter claims that the hospitalization/ventilation/death data is simply lagging.

UK data shows a 3x reduction in hospitalizations.

It also seems evident hospitalizations are not dramatically overwhelmed anywhere right now.

However, Australia is showing no decouplization at all, with severe outcomes as likely as previous waves.

And on that note, we have been hearing since March 2020 that every time there's a new wave that it's nothing like the OG wave and it's not real COVID. And yet, people keep on dropping dead. So I pray that pundits are finally right this time, but sorry if I'm skeptical that this is all over now.

Didn't the professionals say Delta is more dangerous than the original variant? Nobody is claiming that about Omicron.

To me, it seems that the main argument against Omicron ending Covid is that the wave may simply recede before there is herd immunity.

As far as a new variant, prior infection seems to be holding up fairly well in preventing severe outcomes.

I had COVID in March of 2020 and just had it again (assumed to be Omicron).
In some ways Omicron was worse than the first time (I am young and healthy and unvaxxed).

Round 1 - was sick with fever, body aches etc for about 2 days. I lost my smell and had a terrible wracking cough that lasted for probably 6 months. I got my smell back after about a week but it was only in a small capacity. It took probably about 8 months until it came back fully.

Round 2- I had fever and body aches for 1 day, a cough but not too bad, and terrible fatigue, headaches, and overall weakness that lasted a lot longer. I am still not feeling back to myself and it's been almost 2 weeks since symptoms began. It also turned into a sinus infection that I needed antibiotics for.

Most people that got Omicron seem to have gotten it much milder, so I'm not sure why I'm different.

It could be omicron is same severity, however it's affecting people (~90%) who are either vaccinated or had COVID and therefore has less sever effects.

Here in Canada they have recently acknowledged that hospital counts will "Now" begin to count only those in hospital for COVID.
Until now it has been anyone, including those in hospital for broken legs as long as they tested positive for COVID.

(In the past this was considered a conspiracy theory, this is now acknowledged by the government as a change in the way we will proceed to count covid hospitalized).

Since everyone has COVID now, and at a faster rate than before, if you don't make this distinction, the hospital counts is irrelevant

Anecdotally, fatigue seems to be an omicron characteristic.

How prevalent is Omicron in Australia? Maybe the hospitalization rate is higher there because:
1. More delta
2. Lower vaccination (though maybe that isn’t true any longer as they’ve caught up)
3. Less natural immunity because smaller percentage of their population already had COVID, because the locked down so much

I think night sweats are also a unique characteristic of the new variant

I don’t think it’s unique to Omicron

I didn’t have any and know people who had it in spring of 2020.

Fatigue and night sweats were common symptoms in the first wave among acquaintances of mine.

There is a possibility that (if) this wave is more mild, so people are noticing/reporting symptoms that they wouldn't have thought about with earlier variants, as they were having worse symptoms at the time

I never had fever, but had night sweats, but overall, no biggie. Flu was worse, but also no big deal BH.
