When I used the credit (my own), nobody asked to see the card.  It's prepaid, so as far as the hotel is concerned, they got their money.

A side benefit is that you can use any card you want for any incidentals/extras charged to the room, since you've already fulfilled the requirement of paying for the stay with an Amex.

What exactly is the hassle? You book the hotel and add the other person as a 2nd guest. Don't do it if you don't want to but not sure I understand what is too complicated about the process. In addition if it is a hotel that you have loyalty too, you'll receive credit for the night and points for booking.
