The Ellipse is 52 acres, same size as Brooklyn Botanic Garden.  Trump wants to speak in the BBG, so secret service fences it off and install mags so no guns can enter.  And if police then report someone carrying a gun on Eastern Pkwy? Waddya gonna do?  Fence off the whole borough?

If there were thousands of people descending on Brooklyn for the same purpose, and some of those people were seen armed on Eastern Parkway, yes, I would expect a speech in the Botanical Gardens to get canceled.

No, just off the top of my head.
Few years ago I was sitting in the NYU medical school library (Chief Looker Upper, even then) and librarian comes over and says get out, secret service don't want you here.  They were securing the area for the President who was going to speak in a lecture hall, maybe on the floor above.  I had to sit in the cafeteria for an hour, just down the hallway. I wasn't searched, the building was still in general use. They were more focused on looking for bombs than weapons.

Doesn't sound like a gun would have done much good through the floor while people on treetops with assault rifles in an outdoor setting  would.

Last of the Jan 6 hearings in the House just started, and should last about 2.5 hours.  I found the earlier ones fascinating, if only to see the representatives in a format unlike the 5-minute speeches where we usually see.

Nope, don't remember that. Anyway, no reason to justify any prosecution when they broke the law.
This was a violent mob actions were many were injured and or killed. You can't just ignore that.
