Topic Wiki

This thread is to discuss whether people feel that something is unethical, not to find out what the law*/T&C says.

Any Halachic questions should be posted here.

*According to CountValentine this includes religion, but unfortunately for him, the general consensus is that religion will always be entwined in this thread.

*Hint* If you have to ask, It's most likely not ethical.

My point was when it comes to family "secrets", things are different than when dealing with strangers/friends.

If your mother tells you that she is pregnant and makes you promise not to tell anyone and then your father tells you that your mother is pregnant without asking for any promises, you think it'd be ok to break the promise you made to your mother?
That's different as your mother and father are partners in that secret.

But lets say 1 DDFer PMs you a secret way he heard to load cards much faster at WM ATM. But"DON'T TELL ANYONE". Then another DDFer PMs you the same secret he heard, with nothing about whether you can spread it.

(PSA: this is a truly fictional example, please don't PM me for the secret as it doesn't exist).

So who is to say that 1 person owns the secret more than the other one?

agree, assuming person 1 isn't the originator of the secret.

Good point. Well if person 2 is spreading the secret without permission from person 1, maybe he shouldn't have trusted person 2 with the secret!
Not saying that that makes it ethical, just a point.

Anyways if you KNOW person 1 is the originator of the secret that's one thing, but otherwise...

This is an excellent question. I would still go back and ask #1's permission if you expect any more help from that member. This has nothing to do with owning the info but respect for the person you received the info from.

True but that would be going Lifnim Mishuras Hadin. I don't think it could be called unethical if you don't ask him.

You let person #2 know immediately you are already aware of that info.

You are 100% correct. I forgot we are talking ethical/unethical. My statement still stands if you expect help from member #1 again.  ;)

Assuming member1 will ever find out that you told anyone. Which depends on who you tell. There are people out there who can be trusted not to repeat things; you just have to find them.

If it was that valuable to person #2 I would honor the request but would not be bound by it.

To give an example how this works. I started a thread about something that wasn't important to me but was good info. A member felt this might get it killed. Without the member even asking I had the thread deleted.

you tell him I hear your opinion and will use my judgement while being clear that considering that he wasn't your source you do not feel obligated to his restrictions

As my 8th grade teacher used to say: "3 people can keep a secret.. If 2 of them are dead."

By making that promise to person #1, you were assumed to be trusted with the secret.
If you feel comfortable having 1 person you trust to share that info with, you have to assume that your person has his/her own 1 person that "won't tell anybody".
