Topic Wiki

This thread is to discuss whether people feel that something is unethical, not to find out what the law*/T&C says.

Any Halachic questions should be posted here.

*According to CountValentine this includes religion, but unfortunately for him, the general consensus is that religion will always be entwined in this thread.

*Hint* If you have to ask, It's most likely not ethical.

You're sure it's $200 a picture and not each thumb drive?
That's highway robbery!
Correct. They charge over $100 for the largest print, next up is the digital for $200.

I want to return to Amazon an item I didn't like.
What do I use as the reason for the return?  The closest is 'defective item' , but it's not actually defective, just doesn't fit my needs.

I usually go with "No longer needed"

And if they try to charge me return shipping then I chat.

Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Couldn't chat!
And third party seller, so they had me send a message to him.

So I went back and used "defective" and the shipping was free.

And... You just screwed up a 3rd party seller. Maybe he even was Jewish.

Same here. Don't want to cause anyone trouble. Obviously if it was actually defective, it's a different story.

It would be nice if there was a choice for "It didn't fit in my space" or "it didn't end up doing what I needed"

I tried no longer needed. Made me pay for return shipping. Tried chatting.  Couldn’t get past the automaton. So I wrote a note to the seller. But then I started over and changed the return to defective. Free return shipping.

Was the item as described?

If yes, then why should the seller be responsible?

I had socks that didn't fit. Would item as described be valid?
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

+1 for clothing usually but not necessarily for other things that could need to fit somewhere

They usually have measurements. You should measure the space before you buy it

I almost always do. And sometimes the measurements are a tiny drop off or sometimes you're close enough but it just doesn't make it and you can only know by trying. That's an example of why I would specifically buy something that says "Free Returns".

So far I haven't had as issue with chatting to get a free label. And once I went with "returnless refund to amazon balance" since it was a small amount and less hassle than chatting or going to Kohls to get the money back onto my CC.

Free Returns should mean Free Returns, not Free Returns if you meet our unspecified criteria for good reasons to return.

Occasionally that can happen, and then it's the truth

I have returned things under "not as described" if the measurements were considerably different than what was listed.

And sometimes an item doesn't list dimensions altogether!

If I have a music subscription service like Spotify or YouTube music, is it unethical to stream music on a device with the volume off for hours on end while I sleep and such and generate revenue for the artists? In this hypothetical, I'm not the artist, I'm not related to the artist, and wasn't asked by the artist to do this.

It's possible the apps detect this

Likely factored into compensation models
