Topic Wiki

This thread is to discuss whether people feel that something is unethical, not to find out what the law*/T&C says.

Any Halachic questions should be posted here.

*According to CountValentine this includes religion, but unfortunately for him, the general consensus is that religion will always be entwined in this thread.

*Hint* If you have to ask, It's most likely not ethical.

If I have a music subscription service like Spotify or YouTube music, is it unethical to stream music on a device with the volume off for hours on end while I sleep and such and generate revenue for the artists? In this hypothetical, I'm not the artist, I'm not related to the artist, and wasn't asked by the artist to do this.
It's allowed, no worries.

Volume on 0

Could plug in headphones and play it full blast for all I care.

This too. They might have a "are you still listening" prompt ala YouTube/Netflix etc

It goes on for quite a while before you get that. Can still get plenty of plays in

Maybe if you don't respond it will deduct the plays?

This went from "is it ethical" to how can I get away with it. 😃

I made an order in a Lakewood food store nearly two months ago. I got an email yesterday from the store saying that I was mistakenly not charged at the time and they will instead charge me now.

Is that ethical?

I think an email/call prior to process the payment is ethical. Not sure what time frame would change my answer -  but 2 months isn't that long and I would have to assume it was a batch of orders that weren't charged which would result in significant loss.

Are they correct?
I better question would be were you aware not being charged and did you try and correct the situation. Is that ethical?  ;)
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

This has with ethical zero to do. You got a service or a product and you have to pay for it.

What's the question? Would you be ok with taking their food without being charged?

If it messes up your budget, you can ask them to split the charge or wait a short period to charge you.
Failing at maintaining Lurker status.

The question really is whether there is a self-understood mutual understanding that when you swipe your card it will be charged within a reasonable amount of time.

Like if you take something and don't get caught for 90 days then it is yours?  :P

Everyone agrees that it is the establishment's responsibility to process the transaction after I give them a valid card. The only question is what happens now that they botched their job. Bottom line is that I still didn't pay them, but that is absolutely their fault.

It happened to a bunch of stores in Lakewood and other areas. It was a Curb n Go issue not the restaurant. I have a video of owner explaining the issue.
