Topic Wiki

This thread is to discuss whether people feel that something is unethical, not to find out what the law*/T&C says.

Any Halachic questions should be posted here.

*According to CountValentine this includes religion, but unfortunately for him, the general consensus is that religion will always be entwined in this thread.

*Hint* If you have to ask, It's most likely not ethical.

Reminds me of Freakonomics.
The economists decided to test their solution by conducting a study of ten day-care centers in Haifa, Israel. The study lasted twenty weeks, but the fine was not introduced immediately.

For the first four weeks, the economists simply kept track of the number of parents who came late; there were, on average, eight late pickups per week per day-care center. In the fifth week, the fine was enacted. It was announced that any parent arriving more than ten minutes late would pay $3 per child for each incident. The fee would be added to the parents’ monthly bill, which was roughly $380.

After the fine was enacted, the number of late pickups promptly went . . . up. Before long there were twenty late pickups per week, more than double the original average. The incentive had plainly backfired.
I could've told them this would happen without doing a study. Follow the link if you want to know what I mean.
Based on our experiences, by the way. I didn't make up any of the examples used. My wife has had a gan for about ten years now.

I ordered 2 packs of 5dz eggs on instacart from costco for a friend of mine.

The shopper took 3. I chatted in app and asked that he take 2.
He replied "ok".

Yet he checked out with 3 (causing the bill to go up).

Is it ethical to ask support to refund the 3rd pack considering its not what I asked for?

I believe my friend would make use of it however he only asked for 2.

I believe so. It's not what you asked for. If it makes you more comfortable you can mention it in the chat, that you can make use of it but you didn't order it, they'll probably refund you anyway.

Sounds 100% fine to me. Just because you can make it work doesn't make it your problem. They added stuff to your order that you never asked for.

Any reason using a statement credit not as intended should be a problem?
Example:
Not banking, but you can pay for UberEats via Uber Family and it should work.

Baruch Hashem it's not from Unzer. I heard a cute story on an Am i the jerk segment (originally broadcast on terrestrial radio).
Maybe you all have pulled the same shtick.

someone found a great set of outdoor furniture at a big box store (costco maybe?) but did not want or could not assemble it himself. He asked to buy the floor model but was told they could not sell it till they are out of stock in the back. He bought the remaining seven. Showed it was out of stock. purchased the floor model and retuned the 7 he bought.

clever? certainly.
Unethical?

Unethical?

You sort of answered it yourself.
If you do what's right, Hashem will do what's left!

You know the answer about clever but not about unethical?

I wouldn't dare suggest anything without soliciting the opinions of this august forum.
