Topic Wiki

This thread is to discuss whether people feel that something is unethical, not to find out what the law*/T&C says.

Any Halachic questions should be posted here.

*According to CountValentine this includes religion, but unfortunately for him, the general consensus is that religion will always be entwined in this thread.

*Hint* If you have to ask, It's most likely not ethical.

Why is your scenario different than my scenario?
My scenario is hands down unethical. Your scenario is a tough call.

I posed the scenario to my Rabbi and (to my surprise) he thought it would be appropriate to tell them that I had cancelled my reservation on my own, and then see what they say - perhaps they would like the honesty and give me something anyway.

I just called and told the rep that I had cancelled my ressy already. She paused and then said, "Welllll, our system says you have a reservation." And then she gave me 20K points. :-) Yay for honesty!

How long should a piece of carry-on luggage last?
Bought it in 07/2011 from Costco...
Should i return it (Costco lifetime returns) or just buy a new one as i got almost 4 years out of it (used it 6-10 days out of every month).

Personally I'd just buy a new one

OT1H, I feel weird returning something that has only gone through normal wear and tear.
OTOH, certain items have a lifetime guarantee for a reason. They want you to always be happy with the product. See: Lands End
Quote
The Lands' End guarantee has always been an unconditional one. It reads: "If you're not satisfied with any item, simply return it to us at any time for an exchange or refund of its purchase price." We mean every word of it. Whatever. Whenever. Always. But to make sure this is perfectly clear, we've decided to simplify it further: Guaranteed. Period.®

The thing with these returns is, if the store/company doesn't want to take it back because it goes against the T&C of returns, then they could say no. I once had a carry-on that the handle bent badly because I lifted it up stairs by the extended handle. That was not normal wear and tear. I contacted them about the issue and they said we'll replace it. Perhaps you want to go to Costco and explain how it has been damaged throughout the years and let the rep decide whether to accept the return.

i like that idea
i also dont like ppl bringing things back after a few years (see: many young couples who make chilul Hashems by getting new pots)
but laying it out on the table to them gives them the option

I don't know what I would do in such a situation but isn't the fact that you feel weird doing it some sort of indication that you feel it isn't the right thing?

reminds me - I ordered something from Amazon, and they made a big deal (as they probably always do, but I happened to notice it) about the guaranteed delivery date, which was a Saturday. It came on Monday. On a whim I wrote them in email saying that i was surprised that they guaranteed a date and didn't stick to it. which was 100% true. they gave me a free month of Prime. I wasn't expecting it, and felt a little strange after the fact. But I didn't do anything at all wrong or dishonest. So feeling weird isn't really an indication.
OTOH, I'll probably start paying more attention to the dates now....

It's not so simple halachically to use guaranteed delivery for shabbos.

I'm aware.  It usually comes earlier and I rarely pay attention.

I think most will say it is not ethical.
And no, it doesn't help your case.  :o
