Topic Wiki

This thread is to discuss whether people feel that something is unethical, not to find out what the law*/T&C says.

Any Halachic questions should be posted here.

*According to CountValentine this includes religion, but unfortunately for him, the general consensus is that religion will always be entwined in this thread.

*Hint* If you have to ask, It's most likely not ethical.

Generally speaking, yes. The airlines oversell flights in anticipation of no-shows.
OK, good to know. Now I need to know whether it's ethical.

Just because stores build in loss from theft into their prices doesn't mean you're allowed to be the one who causes that loss.

I don’t think anyone here disagrees with you on that.

In theory, no. But when we don't use the term "theft" and replace it with "loss," it becomes a very grey area for many people. I've struggled with it myself.

With the Airline's permission (express or implied)?
Not unless it’s intended for an actual sale.

When Target runs a B2G1free deal, you can cancel 2 of the 3 items and
you'll still get ~33% off the remaining item. Do you think this is ethical?

I personally think this is unethical, because you're trying to take advantage by exploiting an offer. I'd like to think that their software is smart enough to realize what you did, and would flag it to somehow impact your refund (i.e. they know it was B2G1 free, and they only let you return all 3, or insist you give back the 'free' one if you want a refund).

I'd be more inclined to do this by buying the three items and then selling two of them at retail on ebay - in essence, giving yourself the free item for free, or selling two to friends at a 67% price.

I ordered 5 items online from a Frum store. I only received 3, but was charged for all 5. They’re impossible to reach.
Is it ethical to dispute the charges for the whole order?
Is there a way to only dispute those items, I don’t have an itemized receipt?
Any other suggestions?

You can dispute part of a charge.

Is it possible the other 2 items are coming in another shipment?

Cancel after ordering? They won't prorate the discount?

I'm told it is affected by the cost of the cancelled items and that ordering 3 of the same item yields the maximum discount.

No.

Ya what doesn't add up is how obsessed you are with me..Meshimer and Gentech already offer filters for smart phones, its not a profitable industry. You should spend some time doing some DD on that market. Matter of fact go to youtube and put Samsung Kosher and you will see I was the 1st one to make a Samsung smart phone kosher almost 7 years ago.
You should also learn how to read because I did say OVER 50K and no where did I say OVER 30K in 2021 Go back and learn how to read.. Keep attacking me because I enjoy it. It just shows your true character.
Is this ethical?

Is what ethical?
To ask someone to keep attacking someone, on the one hand they asked for it and on the other hand is it ethical?

I personally do not think this is ethical but want to hear from others if they thinks so as well.
A lot of insurances do not pay much for home birth, one of the ways people are getting around this is by signing up to an insurance that pays a lot for the last trimester once the insurance pays for the birth they quit and go back to their regular insurance.

I know this is a by product of the Obamacare mandate to expect people with “preexisting conditions” so the insurance has no choice but to except.

Not even sure if this would work, but also not sure it's ethical:

Son went to ER, bill falls under our deductible, so over $1k. Called the hospital and offered to pay right away if they could give me a discount, they said they can't do that.

Is it ethical to let it go to collections and see if I can negotiate with them?

I see no reason it should be unethical if you're following the rules.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Noob question:
Would that affect credit score? Or only loans going to collection?

Last year I bought 4 tickets on SAA from JFK-JNB for Pesach. Then there was this thing called Covid-19 and all flights were canceled, and I requested a refund for the flights which did not even take off even if we would have wanted to travel. They did not respond to the refund requests (by phone and email) and so I disputed the CC charges and was refunded in full.

More than a year later they finally responded to the email, and are offering me a refund in the form of an SAA travel voucher. Now, it is entirely possible that after I fill in the voucher request form they sent they will pick up that the charges were refunded. It's also SAA, which has the competence level of an average journalist reporting on frum Jews, so more than likely not. It is also entirely possible that SAA will never fly from JFK again and I will have no use for the voucher.

I think applying for the voucher is kind of stealing, but I'm being told by some I'm crazy and I should absolutely fill out the form, and if they send me a voucher, it's on them.

someone that finds a millions dollars with a name on it is also crazy for returning it

or to pass by on Shabbos and skipping it

might be a bit extreme but crazy doesn't define right or wrong
