Topic Wiki

This thread is to discuss whether people feel that something is unethical, not to find out what the law*/T&C says.

Any Halachic questions should be posted here.

*According to CountValentine this includes religion, but unfortunately for him, the general consensus is that religion will always be entwined in this thread.

*Hint* If you have to ask, It's most likely not ethical.

I think applying for the voucher is kind of stealing, but I'm being told by some I'm crazy and I should absolutely fill out the form, and if they send me a voucher, it's on them.

I'm going to, this is more curiousity of what others think rather than a practical question.

Actually, I'm tempted to apply for the voucher just to see if they issue it, but I would not actually use it.

Last year I bought 4 tickets on SAA from JFK-JNB for Pesach. Then there was this thing called Covid-19 and all flights were canceled, and I requested a refund for the flights which did not even take off even if we would have wanted to travel. They did not respond to the refund requests (by phone and email) and so I disputed the CC charges and was refunded in full.

More than a year later they finally responded to the email, and are offering me a refund in the form of an SAA travel voucher. Now, it is entirely possible that after I fill in the voucher request form they sent they will pick up that the charges were refunded. It's also SAA, which has the competence level of an average journalist reporting on frum Jews, so more than likely not. It is also entirely possible that SAA will never fly from JFK again and I will have no use for the voucher.

I think applying for the voucher is kind of stealing, but I'm being told by some I'm crazy and I should absolutely fill out the form, and if they send me a voucher, it's on them.
It's not "kind of" stealing

The problem with that, is they need to count it as a liability.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

You're assuming that SAA is able to count anything

That is some next level incompetency. Impressive even for SAA.
Answer back that your credit card gave you a refund, but you'll be happy to take a voucher as well.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Noob question:
Would that affect credit score? Or only loans going to collection?
Most hospitals send to an internal collection department first and they are fully capable of negotiating a significant amount off.

or to pass by on Shabbos and skipping it

Apples and oranges, the former is an ethical/moral dilemma (bein adam lachavero) the latter is a religious dilemma (bein adam lamakom) and not relevent here at all.

I bought something using a cash back portal and got some money credited to my account. my order then got cancelled. 3 months later my cash gets unlocked and is now able to be cashed out....is it stealing or unethical to take it? or too bad on them?

Assume they only are ready to pay you because the merchant you ordered from paid them. If you decline to accept the payout, are they going to refund the merchant?

I'm not equipped to answer you, just contributing to the discussion.

To add to the discussion.
When Amazon cancels and order, do you ask for compensation?  This cash back can be your compensation.

i would imagine if i dont pull the money out they would just leave it in the account and after a while start charging me a "non usage" fee or the like, i dont think they would be so kind to give it back to the origianal company. but if i decline it instead of just ignoring it, maybe? who knows?

Would you tell Amex that you tried to return something on day 85, when a) you never attempted to return it or b) tried on day 91/95, when the store has a 30/45 return policy?

"Would you..?" is far different then is "Is it ethical to..?" ;)

Just for a start, something that has been bothering me for a while.
Is it ethical to use your 'hatzolah/shmirah/ chaveirim/etc. Parking permit to park on a handicap spot when you are not on a call/emergency (but just plain lazy)?!
This really bothers me when I see it happening in (Jewish) shopping areas.
Who said they are not on a call?

Hey wait a second.  Before we start with new ethical discussions, why don't we address the ones that everyone has been fighting about already, i.e buying on sale and getting full price back, and taking advantage of return protection if they aren't going to make you return the item.

Excuse me?  First of all, why are you taking for granted that you need to say something?!  If its Taus Akum, that is not necessarily true.  Just because that's what feels right, that is not always what dictates Halacha.  And the same could very possibly go for the Amazon thing.
WOrk for your money.
