Allegedly some Pax upgraded themselves to J without asking and a brouhaha ensued, so they returned to deplane.. I would've dropped em off in Halifax but no one asked me.

BH it wasn't any שומר שבת that created the חילול־השם, but it is still a חילול־השם, and presumably they are Jewish. So BH not stranded in Halifax for Shabbos.  Hopefully they learned their lesson.



But the twist of low quality Israeli reporting never fails.

My experience, just returned from IL this week, and both my way going and the return had 100+ empty seats.

Diverting a flight for a non emergency situation to prove a point for 1 or 2 self upgrade passengers or not having the mask on all the time is a new low.
why make suffer the rest 100+ passengers?
Why not have police wait for him/her upon arrival and ban him/her from future flights?
This only makes everyone unhappy and results in lost of revenue to the airline industry. I would set up in each airline a small department that deals with this petty stuff, so a pilot would have to first consult with airline to return a flight for this type of non life threatening small petty stuff.

Situation could probably be mitigated if they allowed for onboard paid upgrade (IINM this is/was common practice with Russia and Ukraine based airlines, and possibly also with ELAL).

Adopting an onboard paid upgrade policy could bring extra revenue and mitigate these kinds of incidents, especially if it's a clear and transparent policy (could offer different rates to different FF tiers, along with other variations, as long as it's transparent and not too much of a bargain).
