Globle Game - Have you been to the country? (SPOILER ALERT)
« on: February 03, 2022, 05:44:37 PM »
In the Wordle thread, someone introduced this game, in which you basically play hot and cold trying to figure out the day's country. Try it:

https://globle-game.com/

I never heard of today's country, and I'm intrigued by it, but I didn't want to put spoilers in the Wordle thread, so I started a dedicated thread.

Being that this is the first post, I will avoid writing the answer to today's country in this post, and will make a new post for it, so that the spoiler warning can be effective.

I never heard of Lesotho. When I hit bright red on South Africa, I looked at Google and I noticed this country landlocked by SA. What's pshat in it? Is it somewhere South Africans travel often, or is it totally independent?

I have, but I've played way too much of this: https://online.seterra.com/en/vgp/3355.

It's not just landlocked, it's also 1 of only 3 enclave countries.

There’s also Eswatini. I didn’t find out Swaziland was renamed Eswatini (in 2018) until the travel bans for African countries started up when Omicron fear took over. Eswatini is landlocked too, and shares most of its border with SA, but some with Mozambique.

Had a JNB-Eswatini-Mozambique-Durban-Lesoto road trip planned for next week. Went with a different plan on the end.

Uch I hate this game. The South Pacific and Caribbean is just impossible, you can never click on what you want to.

These country-within-a-country countries are so interesting, whatever kind of enclave it is or isn’t.

I find weird trivia interesting as well, and actually got it on my 8th try today.  I remember looking at a map of the world and wondering what that large lake was in the center of South Africa.  Come to find out it wasn't a lake.  Another interesting group of countries is that of doubly-landlocked countries.

This one is only good on desktop, where you can control better. There might be some on sporcle that are playable on mobile.

Lesotho is an enclave because it's swallowed up inside a single country (SA), as are Vatican City and San Marino (both Italy). Eswatini borders 2 countries and is therefore not an enclave. These are relatively straightforward. Once you get into territorial enclaves/exclaves it gets really crazy. Real Life Lore had a video on that a while back.

Italy has 2. And there are cities that are like this as well.

Not necessarily. Have you heard of the Kingdom of Mustang/Upper Mustang?

(Those two are technically not the exact same thing, and yes, you can argue such things aren’t countries)

To me they’re all interesting. Lichtenstein, Macau, Hong Kong (OBM), Kaliningrad, Transnistria, Suriname, yada yada yada.

Not enclaves, nothing in common other than that they interest me :P

Just another "country" that most people who haven't read Zman issue 1 probably never heard of.

Many islands with interesting stories aren’t countries at all. Reminds me of this great read:
