New/Interesting/Random Tech
« on: February 03, 2022, 08:16:53 PM »
Figured I'd start a thread as I came across something interesting but didn't know where to share it- AFAIK there's no Random Tech thread or Interesting Tech thread...

Just came across this: https://what3words.com/

They have a website and apps. A=The apps work offline.

I heard about it from a police report saying that they successfully used this to locate someone lost in a forest. Not sure how exactly they used it- maybe the guy had what3words and was able to tell them his location, or maybe they used it internally. From a quick google search it sounds like it's used internally by some police/EMS as it's more accurate than an address or coordinates, and it seems that emergency dispatchers in some places also have it in case a caller has their W3W location.

My first question was how is this different from long./lat. coordinates, but their selling point seems to be that it's a easier to tell someone over the phone, etc. Though online reviews caution that sometimes similar words are used in close proximity so there can be mix-ups when words are said over the phone/radio, which seems to be a flaw.

People also mention using it to meet up with someone in a big mall, park, etc. In that sense it seems to work exactly like coordinates, except that practically speaking nobody ever gives someone their coordinates when trying to find them and maybe this catches on a bit easier.

Thought it was interesting enough to share.

I don’t follow the analogy, one of us knows things the other one doesn’t :P

Personally I think this is stupid as it locks you into their arbitrary system for identifying a location (vs. an address that isn’t necessarily locked into any system, other than perhaps the municipalities that control address conventions and street names for that locale. Their FAQs explain that they intentionally don’t use same/similar words for adjacent squares for error mitigation, but I still see it as stupid nevertheless.

Agreed, not so useful where addresses are clear. But looks like it could work for areas where addresses won't help, like somewhere in a forest/park/mall where it's either map coordinates or this.

They say they don't use similar words in adjacent blocks but apparently people have found similar words 1 letter off as close as 1.2 miles away. 1.2 miles is a failure if someone is lost in a forest.

Great point in Lakewood it should be required to use this along with your address when requesting a car (or any other) service

Similar word and the other two the same? Sounds like an epic fail. Should have had their word assignment list peer-reviewed before going live, seeing as you can’t really change things after the fact.

I think so, but I can't find it now. Or maybe 2 similar word and 1 same.

I would like this W3W if they just used non-arbitrary numeric coordinates with a standardized grid. Then it doesn’t belong to them. There can be a layer on top of that that uses three.word.addressing but that would be optional.

We can even call it Longitude and Latitude.

Cool but weird. Is it basically plagiarized sentence cobbled together?

Check out this masterpiece:

Seems like not. It should have been able to quote from articles mentioning Ben Zion Shenker and Modzitz.

I was doubtful about this, but it seems to work amazingly well.

Story:
The Dansdealsforum was a website where people could buy and sell deals. It was founded by Count Valentine, a wealthy man who wanted to make sure that everyone had access to good deals. One day, a new user signed up to the forum. He was a teenage boy named Jack. He was looking for a new computer to use for school. Jack found a deal on the Dansdealsforum that he couldn't resist. It was a used computer for sale. The price was very reasonable, and the computer was in great condition. Jack quickly made a purchase on the forum, and he was excited to get his new computer. He was sure that it would help him with his schoolwork.
