You're making as if Putin being called a friend was a universal opinion here. Even those that took that position, it was in a very specific, narrow context - treatment of Jews in Russia compared to historic persecution.

Precisely because you've gone through all of that you would realize how tenuous the current situation is. When you see a leader murdering dissidents and consolidating power so as to become an authoritarian dictator in the same mold as the ones who persecuted you in years past, you have the distinct historical awareness to be weary of his "friendship".

As pragmatic as one should be in showing gratitude and respect to the murderous scumbag who is affording you relative safety *right now*, you'd be equally pragmatic in ensuring your didn't get too chummy with a manipulative thug who might be using your purported friendship as a front.

Not to mention the moral obligation of not turning a blind eye to the suffering of others at the hands of the friendly murderer, after all, how many times have you seen it done to you, the Russian Jew?

The Syria threat and need to stay on working terms with Russia in their operations there was mentioned way too casually. That's an imperative that is impossible to overstate.
