Polio Outbreak In Israel?
« on: March 11, 2022, 10:27:18 AM »
After Israel confirmed its first case of polio since 1988 this week, doctors said Friday that there are another two preliminary positive results from stool samples, raising fears of an outbreak.

An unvaccinated four-year-old girl has been confirmed with polio, and has now left Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center for support in a specialist hospital, after the virus harmed her muscles.

The diagnosis marked the first clinical case of polio in Israel in 34 years. - Times of Israel

Did vaccination rates drop recently?
Quote
Levine was less optimistic, saying that while national vaccination rates are high, there are neighborhoods, especially in Jerusalem, where the take-up is much lower.

“If on a local level there is low coverage, that’s a problem, as when it comes to vaccination we’re as strong as our weakest link,” he said.

All that's needed is someone to alert the higher ups at GSK

apparently it was likely caused by shedding from the OPV the Oral Polio vaccine which uses live virus....

“The recently reported case was identified in a child who was 3 years and 9 months old and showed symptoms of paralysis, said Oliver Rosenbauer, a spokesman for the WHO. He said this was an isolated case of a vaccine-derived poliovirus, a mutated form of the virus that can be fostered by the oral vaccine used in many countries and can cause paralysis when spread over a period of time between unvaccinated children.

“It is definitely not a wild poliovirus, imported from Pakistan or Afghanistan,” Mr. Rosenbauer said in an email, referring to the main and most dangerous form of the virus. “That we know for certain. But more needs to be found out, in terms of where or how this strain emerged, and whether it is circulating.”

What’s the irony? If there wouldn’t be so many unvaccinated children this could never have happened..

You guys have to chill. It is ironic, like it or not. Doesn't mean you shouldn't take the vaccine or that higher vaccination rate wouldn't have prevented it.

The polio vaccine is one of the most positive developments in healthcare ever. This is still quite ironic.

Of course its ironic. The oral pill is most often used in countries that don't have cooling capability that civilized countries have.

It is also used by people afraid of needles or people that are generally anti-vax but are willing to take a pill, and there is the irony the pill has some 1 in 2.3 million chance of giving actual polio, but because they elect not to get the shot due to unknown fears they run a higher chance of contracting Polio.

In Israel they use both.  When they started giving the OPV again in 2013, the misrad habriut was saying that the regular vaccine is less successful at preventing transmission.  Now, with so many people who are behind on their vaccinations because of Covid, (besides those who don't vax for various reasons,) it has become more of an issue.
