CVS pharmacy counter closed for midday lunch break
« on: May 12, 2022, 10:08:14 PM »
Get this, effective 2/11, many (or is it every?) CVS’s pharmacy counter is closed for 30 minutes in middle of the day, to offer the employees a lunch break.

I stopped by CVS the other day and got on line for the pharmacy at 1:25pm, waited 5 minutes, and then they just told everyone waiting to come back after 2pm because they’re closing for lunch. They pointed to this sign:

Then they closed the counter:

I’m all for people having lunch breaks, but something about this felt so in-American. I felt like I was back in Italy where midday siesta is a thing.

Costco Pharmacy does this.

Costco Pharmacy does this.

When I googled for this story I found that a lot of places (e.g. Walmart?) do, because the rest of the pharmacy can’t keep working while the single on-site licensed pharmacist is on lunch break.

But it’s new to me, and it feels weird. Also the way it went down was odd, can’t they service customers who were waiting on line, or at tell people waiting that they’ll be closing and it isn’t worth waiting?

that could take the whole 30 minutes!

they definitely should. Maybe they assume that everyone saw the sign? I saw it on the entrance door at a CVS a few weeks ago.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

At least serve the people whose scripts are ready?

What were they doing before? My guess is the pharmacist ate lunch while working, and this is just an opportunity for them to save money by not paying workers for their lunch breaks.

CVS is SLOW

IIRC what I read was that it was due to staffing shortage. Maybe they used to have more pharmacists so there was always someone around when the other(s) were out to lunch?

That’s what I was thinking. But it’s likely a money thing, and it’s cheaper to inconvenience customers than have to hire more pharmacists.
