Typing fast on a phone is a slightly different skill than regular WPM.

What is considered typical?

I was just wondering if the variation on our Leaderboard is related to speed of typing in this small group, and DDFers aren't necessarily typical.

But since you ask, I found this article which gives these averages of words per minute from one study where people were asked to type as quickly and accurately as possible:

on a keyboard - 52
phone - 36

phone 2 thumbs or fingers  - 38
one finger -29

age:
10-19 yo - 40
40-49 - 29
50-59 - 26

If you want to check your typing speed, you might prefer this test.  It's the one researchers used in that experiment, and uses everyday sentences, rather than the encyclopedia-like paragraph of the previous test.  https://typingtest.aalto.fi/

But this might be a better way to figure out if typing speed is an issue on solving the minis.  After you've solved it, hit Reset, and fill it in again a few times.  What's the fastest you can complete the grid when you're sure of the answers?

The first time, I focused on accuracy. My overall WPM was 50, with my fastest sentence being 84. I made .35 percent uncorrected mistakes, which was is the lowest demographic. The second time, I focused on speed. My overall WPM was 63, with my fastest sentence being 91. I left 4.75 percent uncorrected mistakes.

I think that I could probably do faster and more accurate with my own sentences. The test format threw me off a bit. Maybe I'll try again later...

My first attempt I got 68 WPM with 1.17% uncorrected, and improved(?) on my second try to 75 WPM with 1.8% uncorrected. I found it interesting because I’ve generally considered myself a below average typist, yet I supposedly rank in the 90th percentile for speed. This was done with my thumbs, not a keyboard.

Perhaps they’re including non-native English speakers in the data?
