Kiddush cup size
« on: April 07, 2022, 07:26:45 PM »
How big is your Becher?

I was under the impression that mine was small, but after measuring it out I see that it is close to 6 oz. That is much larger than the shiur and I realized that I have been drinking much more wine than necessary all these years at the sedorim. May be a good idea to measure yours....

Yes, I realized this years ago as well. Most people's bechers are unnecessarily large for the shiur.
So many people unnecessarily torture themselves by using these "standard" size bechers. Not even talking about the people who have these ridiculously large sized ones, or the fact that the larger volume of silver = higher price, ממש עולם גולם.

When I realized this, I went to get new bechers before the next pesach. What a difference.

Shiur Chazon Ish is approx. 5.3 oz.

Shiur R’ Chaim Naeh is closer to 3oz. and for many people that’s enough.

Personally I enjoy my largish be her and the buzz of 4x 6oz of potent wine, it makes the singing at Hallel at the end more lively (:

right, as mishna berurah says for drabanan you can use smaller shiur which h is just under 3 oz. Multiply that by 4x per Seder and I feel a little to buzzed at the end...

A 3 oz cup is quite small looking and most people would assume it is not the shiur, but that is not the case.

I didn't measure mine, but I believe it's under 4oz. (as is my year round becher). Last year I found large looking glass cups that are around 4oz or less and got a case for my family and guests. This year I also found nice looking 3.5oz plastic cups at KRM, so I have various options for everyone.

Sedorim aren't that tough. Seudas Moshiach is much more of a challenge. Especially with Havdolo after it.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Most healthy people try to do things in a lechatchila way.

FTFY, unless it’s your “excuse” to get out of said work :P

Why can't someone design a nice size becher with a false bottom so it can have less wine, but still be the same impressive standard look?

Just would add that says here, seems from Rav David Feinstein ztl that when the first cup is also Kiddush for Shabbos Friday night (which makes it d'orayso) you should use a bigger shiur of 4.4oz. klalgovoah.org/haggadah

So I guess you'd want your becher at least 4.4oz or whatever your d'orayso measurement you go with.
(He also mentions only 1.5oz is necessary to actually be drunk, even if it is Friday night. Although always better to drink majority of the cup, and best the whole thing)

Not if they hold of R Chaim Noe's shiur lechatchila.

Now that’s what I call halving your cup and drinking it too

You know what else takes away chashivus? Calling it a 'kiddish cup' instead of a 'becher'!

What have we fallen to DDF?! Do we also say 'Shabbos lunch'??
