I would add though to the average American in 2022 the answer to the poll would probably be Steve, a lot more people own iPhones over teslas..

They both blazed a trail, Steve Jobs was better at taking existing ideas and redesigning/repackaging them and bringing them to market as premium/experiential products. Elon Musk is a real innovator and who is able to envision bring to reality a vision that pushes the envelopes of what’s possible.

I’d say that it’s likelier that we’d get closer to where we are now with PCs/handhelds without Steve Jobs, than we would with a whole host of things without Elon Musk.

I think Steve Jobs would be classified more as a sales person who knew what would sell, as opposed to Musk who is more of an inventor.

Not a sales person but rather a fashion designer

Some would argue that the world is the people

Steve Jobs died more than a decade ago, so a young adult nowadays might not remember him and certainly won’t remember Jobs in 2007 when the first iPhone was released, or from before that.

jj1000 means we’re asking about the affect of Jobs vs. Musk on the entire world (all 8 billion people), not about those two individuals alone. Musk + Jobs ≠ the entire world.

The current felt effect, or the down the line effect of current events?

I believe we can pretty much see now the effect Jobs made and it may take a while to feel the effects that Musk already made, not to mention the potential for the future.

This is true. The issue is that the more you abstract it the less you can attribute the evolution to any one person. OTOH the poll question asks about “as of today”, which kinda precludes “down the line”, unless you mean prospectively.

In any case it isn’t a fair comparison because Jobs’ direct contribution ended while Musk’s is ongoing, and as you said, even Musk’s contributions to date haven’t fully ripened.
