Cell service while on Mediterranean Cruise (Italy, France, Spain)..

I am with Verizon in U.S. (Iphone 13) and will be leaving for a 2 week trip.  In the past, I used to buy SIM cards to be able to make/receive calls.  Unfortunately, I am the primary caretaker for my father and need to keep it simple using my regular phone #.

Any suggestions beyond Whatsapp to make and receive calls at a reasonable rate while traveling and have decent phone service?

Verizon has decent roaming packages, but I don't think it includes on sea.

If you'll have Wi-Fi/data Google voice can work with a local number

You can then forward your Verizon number to your Google voice before you leave
