Both sides grab the first opportunity to capitalize on a tragedy to further their agendas. Democrats and Republicans are fairly equally shamelessly opportunistic. It's basic human nature to want to identify a cause of a tragedy and take action to make one feel like it won't reoccur. All humans do this with all tragedies. It's not just politicians.

I never got why anyone ever thought that the death penalty would actually deter anyone from perpetuating a mass shooting. I don't think it's tipping the balance for anyone considering carrying one of these out.

Copycats are actually motivated more by the degree of notoriety achieved and publicity generated, if anything. There would be an element of logic to discouraging these stories from blowing up the way they do (although I don't know if that's really a good idea - it would be remarkably crass to allow a horrific tragedy like this to transpire with nary a word in the media and a public expression of our collective grief and horror).

To respond to such arguments I say that the concept of having a death penalty is not so much to give it at this point but to condition the mindset of people from a young age that this is a red line you don't cross no matter what. It will raise the bar of craziness needed to commit such crimes likely preventing this one if there was a death penalty 20 years ago. Thus overall it would prevent such attacks.

In other words - it's not the punishment that would stop it. It's the years and years of conditioning people from a young age that will.

But that is not my personal reason for being pro death penalty. The reason is simple - justice never follows logic it always follows emotions. My emotions say this person deserves to die. Simple as that.

Ok I'll bite - people that believe (politically) in gun control don't think that this is offensive or insensitive; on the contrary, they feel they're properly commemorating the victims deaths by trying to avoid this happening in the future, and there's no better time to do it than when the paint is still wet.

The one benefit a quick death penalty would provide would be taking the killers' names out of the news cycle for the next few decades. There is something to be gained from not having to see updates on mass killers in jail every time they sneeze.

I don't know why this became a death penalty discussion, but none of the issues mentioned in my thread are addressed by the death penalty
