A fantastic substitute to Microsoft Office & OpenOffice.org, Softmaker, in my opinion, comes really close to being one of my favorite alternative word processing programs. It's much faster, lightweight, and many times appear to be a more compatible replacement for Microsoft Word files. For a while now, SoftMaker Office 2006 is freeware in the hopes you'd upgrade to 2008. But now, they're offering 2008 for free (with serial) for a limited time until December 31. Also, SoftMaker donates € 0.10 for every successful download to well-chosen development and charity projects on betterplace.org. Even if you're not interested now, I still strongly advise to register for a serial (Gmail users can use the username+randomword.here@gmail.com trick just in case). It can also be used as a portable app for on the go, when you follow the wizard in helping you setting up . I think everybody should give it a try, especially if it's free for a limited time.
