Literally just went out and bought 2 new (for me) ice creams to try:
Tuscanini vanilla gelato
and
Phil & Bill Capt. Ahab Strawberry (with chocolate granola)
here's my take:
Tuscanini gelato:
Too sweet, a bit very creamy (I wondered if it was egg yolk based, but nope they use mono and diglycerides for emulsification), very strong vanilla flavor- they use imititation vanilla extract and natural vanilla bean.
Phil & Bill:
Nice fresh real strawberry flavor, just sweet enough (little hints of tartness cut the sweetness). Texture was off, though. Soggy granola bits and icy particle consistency. Perhaps it just doesn't travel well (I picked these up in LKWD)
2hrs later UPDATE:
went back for a 2nd spoonful.
Perused Phil & Bill's ingredients- this one does have egg yolks in the base. Once you identify it, it's hard to miss. IIRC this is French style ice cream. In addition to the strawberries, there is some citrus added, which works great for the overall flavor. I would be curious to taste another carton to see if the texture issue was just a one off.
Tuscanini- I am put off by the overly creamy texture, I would say it is almost gummy. Not a fan of vanillin (imitation vanilla) but I can forgive it, but this one doesn't have a good finish. Something of a chemically aftertaste (that I usually associate with fake sugars). Will not try again.
