Israeli Army Problems
« on: June 09, 2022, 04:08:31 PM »
Hey everyone,
Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm not sure what to do so I might as well try.
My family made Aliyah when I was 5 (2000), and I lived in Israel until the age of 16 (2011), and then I started learning in yeshiva in the US.
When I was 17 (2012) my family moved back to the US and I have not been to Israel since.
Last year, I tried going to Israel for my sister's wedding, but my request to renew my Israeli passport was denied because they said I need to do an Hesder Ma'amd. I tried doing an Hesder Ma'amad but my request was denied, and they said I have the status of a draft dodger and I must come to Israel and complete my service. They noted in the letter that if I will be arrested upon entering Israel. I ended up missing my sister's wedding.

Does anyone have experience with similar situations?
Is there a way for me to sort this out from the US without going to Israel and getting arrested?
Should I just not go to Israel ever again?

There's probably no quick fix, but it is probably not too hard. You will probably need to make an arrangement with נציג צה"ל at the consulate (when he is there, you will need to find out and might need an appointment).

You should also consider suing your parents for making silly moves and putting you in this situation.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Getting an Israeli citizenship is worse than flying Spirit. It's a lifetime (and more) of headaches.

Friends don't let friends get Israeli citizenship. My FIL lived there for 6 decades without becoming a citizen. My mother lived there for decades and only got citizenship when she was having problems renewing her South African passport and needed a passport to travel.

I'm not that desperate to go to Israel. Legally changing my name is a huge hassle.
Also in previous times when I've gone to Israel they've asked for both my passports, so I assume they have record of my American passport.

I agree, my parents were very clueless at the time.

You should also consider suing your parents for making silly moves and putting you in this situation.

All the people that I know who made aliyah and then yeridah (my parents included) were very committed to staying and thought there was no chance that they'd move back and create a massive headache for their kids. Many also simply have no idea that it could create problems.

(Granted, even if you stay you might not want to take citizenship, but I imagine there are benefits...)

In Israel it's definitely not what you know, it's who you know. But most people don't know the right people (system wouldn't work if everyone did) so I'm not sure "making a few calls" is a viable option for the masses.

Part of my reason for this post, is maybe someone can refer to one of these people that can maybe guide me in the right direction.

I feel like I read something recently in a publication about this, but I can't remember where....There was someone who can help navigate the process.

Chaim V'chessed is probably a good place for OP to start. They might not be able to provide exact guidance but I imagine they should be able to point you in the right direction to find someone who can help.

A lot of the yeshivos also have people who do this stuff for their talmidim, so if you can connect with one of those guys they should know people who can help.

My current passport has never been to Israel. Maybe I can get my name changed to remove my middle name.
Although I can't risk them somehow figuring it out with face detection or something and then getting in even more trouble for trying to defraud them.

There is no face detection. They can search by name and DOB if they become suspicious.
