Got a phone call today to take my CC to pay the fee for the application to renounce. Was told that charge would be done later and I will be informed of the amount.

Also got this for my 17 year old daughter:

Just as an aside, this is a perfect example of Israeli טרללת and טרטרת. Why not exempt her outright now? As a shomer shabbos female she would be exempt even if she was born and lived in Israel. Why make this a potential multi-step process with issues and such a lengthy letter about various scenarios. Just exempt her and have it over.

There is no automatic exemption. The schools have to do it. In the last few years they have a task force that looks up girls (especially if not applied for exemption under a school) if they suspect they are more shvach and if they find anything less than chareidi on social media they try to draft them.

I guess the schools is an alternative to:

One year visit is all you need for her seminary...
If she stays longer then she looses her current exemption and she needs to "prove" that she is shomer shabbos to get another type of exemption. It's a pain in the ... but it's doable.
It's all the price of citizenship.
If I correctly recall there were several discussions here where people were very interested in getting other than US/Israeli - mainly EU citizenships - without thinking through the potential pitfalls that can arise as a result.

Received an email this morning (after emailing them several arguments yesterday) kind of acknowledging that they are clueless about the process, stating that they emailed their higher ups in Israel for guidance as to the procedures.

Recent updates:

Received email acknowledgement that they were wrong, and children under 18 don't need to apply separately or pay a fee, but they do need to sign a written declaration IN FRONT OF A CONSUL.  So they refunded me the $114 the charged for my daughter's "application".

Being that my teenage daughters are away for the summer, I've tried to argue against signing in front of a consul, but so far to no avail. Based on my research it might be possible to have the signature notarized, and then certified and apostilled. I am trying to beg for a video conference appearance.

While nothing is being submitted yet, they did rush to charge the fee ($114 for each of the parents) even though they aren't submitting yet.

Such crazyniess

The ridiculous thing is, as I pointed out to them, that they are requiring a written (notarized by the consul) statement from MINORS on whom they involuntarily forced an unwanted citizenship, and they didn't require written consent, much less notarized, at that point!

Since when does one take written statements from minors?

Since when does one take written statements from minors?

Took my older (17 and change) daughter to the consulate today. The vice consul came over and read the statement I had prepared for her. She then went ahead to tell my daughter that if she gives it up now, it is "very hard to get it in the future (unless she does aliya)".

I asked her why she's trying scare tactics, so she said she is just following the law and has to inform of the ramifications.

We then discussed what to do about my 16yo who couldn't show up. I brought a written statement that was notarized (but I didn't have a chance to obtain an Apostille for it). She took it and said that she doesn't know what will happen because army issues were not settled (I interjected and said that she wouldn't be subject to army service in any event). But eventually agreed to submit along with a letter from me explaining the situation of my younger daughter not being able to appear.

Lastly, I mentioned that my daughter will be needing a student visa. She retorted that she can't get it now because she's legally an Israeli citizen. And went on to her stupid scare tactics of saying that it could take a year for the renouncement to be approved.

I bumped into a friend on Friday and told him that I finally submitted my application to renounce.

He told me that he and his brother renounced 8 years ago. He denied having any children at the time. He told me that the renouncements were approved in about 2 weeks.

any update?

Still waiting. I did get their attention (and touched a raw nerve) when I sent my 16 year old and requested in advance that the consul should stick to their duty only and notarize her signature and not lie about it being difficult to obtain citizenship later. Got an angry email back from a supervisor. Bottom line my 16yo daughter went and signed the declaration. I am still waiting.

Also got this for my 17 year old daughter:

While not very relevant for me or my daughter at this point, this includes important information regarding the status of those that are Israeli citizens by virtue of birth outside of Israel to Israeli citizens.

Well, well. What do you know? This morning I get a message from my nephew with the following photo:

This was sent to an address that was never provided to anyone. It could have gone unnoticed for months (or forever?) I guess I should consider myself lucky that it was brought to my attention, so we can deal with it now, rather than be surprised and be held up when she tries to board a flight to come home for Pesach.

Getting rid of the citizenship of this dysfunctional country can't come soon enough.

Is it to early to ask the consulate for an update?

I emailed them today asking. Since renouncement requires approval by the minister of interior, I presume that the political turmoil since the last elections were announced put such requests far on the back-burner. Now that a government was formed, I am hoping to see movement.
