Rav Herschel Shachter and the like weren't part of the speech scene back then and not this time either. We're talking of Lakewood yeshivish style speeches together with the chassidish which aren't so different when it comes to inspiration about technology. Also, there is no rebbe speeches for women. Think about Reb Nchemya Gotleib, Reb Ephraim Waxman, Reb Berl Tauber etc. who can easily appeal to both demographics.

I’m more likely to come (and encourage my friends to come) if I think you’re honoring me, it also has better optics (perhaps w/r/t bitty Torah) since it’s more directly Kavod HaTorah.

A few years back the Roshei Yeshivah signed on a letter opposing the TLS billboards. Since then he seems to have made a kabbalah/neder/shevuah/cherem not to post anything positive about BMG or the Roshei Yeshiva. Yes, sounds kind of pathetic, but from his perspective as he was promised the billboards by the Vaad, his understanding probably was that there would be no opposition.

In general, it seems the media companies wanted compensation for any coverage from the big money behind this event, and perhaps it wasn't coming in.
