Btw, unrelated to anything, and I hope this isn't taken wrong way, but it bothers me a bit when people make fun of Fetterman's incoherency. It's well known that this is a result of a stroke he recently suffered, and it does seem that his cognitive reasoning and communication skills are still fully intact, sans damage to his auditory language processing. It's like making fun of a polio victim that they can barely walk. At some point, we should move past that. Our politicians and leaders shouldn't have to be movie stars, and bombastic skills shouldn't be the benchmark of a capable leader. I know that it's not like Fetterman is the paradigm of virtue, and he didn't exactly run a clean and smear free campaign either. I don't know if he's quite deserving of any defense or sympathy. I'm bothered more in the name of all stroke victims or medical incident survivors than for his sake.

Again, no offense intended to anyone, who is just accurately pointing out the fact that it's incredible that he won in spite of fact that voters do take these things pretty seriously, and public image is paramount.

Who made fun of him?

ETA:

I saw people saying he's hard to elect or he's not the image of a representative or should be easier to beat than others, but that's not making fun IMO. It's realistic to people's perception.

Nobody here. Many Republicans and maga type pointed to it as a sign of incompetency and a pathetic candidate.

Itís sad that so much of politics has devolved into mockery contests totally non focused on ideals and policies. It dissuades many decent folk from being involved.
Of course no one epitomizes this problem more than Trump.

Did you watch the debate? He had closed captioning so he can't blame that on "auditory processing."

All of this is completely beside the point. The ability to have conversations is an important part of being a senator. He should have lost because he doesn't have the ability to do the job, not because he doesn't look good on TV.

Which shows just how poor of a candidate Oz was and how little influence Trump has in PA.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Indeed. But the media covering for Fetterman also needs to be taken into consideration.

They accepted his campaign's claims about his health without any verification, and attacked the one reporter who told the truth about him. By the time people found out the truth, it was too late to change the trajectory, at least for a candidate as flawed as Oz.

If he was running for president to me the stroke would be a disqualifier. Only for the reason is that you have to make split second decisions. As a senator that is not needed and AFAIK his thought process is intact.

Now many here will claim who am I to talk when I attack the former president non-stop. What they won't say I was one of the first ones to call out the scumbags wishing he would die when he had covid.

Not sure about that. His approval was in the 30's. Did he get way more than that because of Trump or because he was a R?

I agree with you 100% no one should be ridiculing him for having a stroke. But it is 100% valid to question his ability to hold public office with the neurological damage that is quite blatant. There is evidence that it is not limited to "auditory language processing", and it is not clear at all that his "cognitive reasoning and communication skills are still fully intact". Even non-republican reporters said they weren't sure he was understanding them in interviews, and his performance in the debate was shocking. The real shameful behavior is from his family and the PA dems who kept him in the race after the stroke instead of pulling him out.

Again, I agree that anyone mocking or ridiculing him is gross.

Of course youíre right. But itís the way the argument is made that bothers people. Itís distasteful to keep focusing on the opponents ďbrain damageĒ. The voters had plenty of exposure to his speech problems, the point can be made in a more gracious fashion.

Look at the difference between Oz and Mastriano. No question that a candidate even *slightly* better than Oz wins with ease.

I watched his winning speech last night, it was much better than his debate performance (tbh I just watched clips of the debate)

He certainly doesn't look or dress like your standard politician

That's the point, it wasn't just speech problems. The voters did NOT get an honest look at his problems because the media covered for him. Yes, the people that mocked and ridiculed are gross. But it is not distasteful to focus on "brain damage" for someone seeking such high public office. It is a legitimate concern. And the people that spoke about it in a respectful way were called ableists and in at least one case, Ds tried to have a reporter fired for it.
