I went out tonight and the 18% was 24.84.
Then, if I feel generous I can give an additional 18%  at 30.96 which is tipping on the tip !!

I asked the manager and he was surprised as well.....

And on the tax too lol

I will defer to you as you are the smart man, but isn't it on the tip, not on the tax?

Lol! But this time I’m right, it’s on the total tip and tax.

tips which grow or shrink based on service.

IINM, there is research that shows that the amount people tip does not change based on the service.

I guess they didn't ask me. Although it takes something out of the ordinary for me to change in either direction.

This can’t be true except perhaps where gratuity is mandatory

I think you're proving the point. Unless service is significantly good or bad, you'll give the same tip. Meaning in the vast majority of cases, you'll give the same tip irrespective of the service level.

The quoted research mentioned service making no difference.
My personal experience is that it does.
Fwiw, now that nyc laws are moving toward regular minimum wage for tipped workers, I would probably be more likely to leave out a tip for bad service.

Fascinating

The results of these studies indicate that tipping is positively related to consumers' service evaluations, but that this relationship is weak. Evaluations of the service encounter accounted for only 1-6% of the variance in bill adjusted tips in these studies.

It seems some think a service fee and tip/gratuity are the same. They are not.

In what regard? They’re the same in the sense they both make the experience more expensive, the rest is semantics.

Since covid many places have been adding service fees. These do not go directly to the waiters, waiters assistants, cooks and others like your tip/gratuity does. It is not a matter of semantics.

I wonder if that is partially due to the places requiring that waiters be paid minimum wage or increased ability for waiters to demand higher salary. The sentiments expressed here indicate they may be simply reducing tips.

Are you sure the mandatory gratuities all go to staff?

Agree, especially in a coffee shop with an eino yehudi looking behind you, so you're almost forced into it.

I'm glad that the opinion by some Americans is starting to change. It's about time.
By the Do in Manhattan, many years ago, which I really enjoyed, there was a waitress serving us that was purposefully rude. We were busy doing our thing, so we weren't bothered by her.
Nevertheless, she was left an enormous tip, and up to today I'm wondering what in the world...
