Since this is for sure the first time this was discussed, it痴 smart to start a new thread.

Welcome to DDF. Let me show you around. I'm Yitzy and I'm pretty new here myself, but I did do intensive exploration before I dared post my first post. I quickely learned that here at DDF there are threads about everything, from where to buy colored toilet paper, to what to do if Chase closes your accounts (which we call by its sophisticated name, Chase A/A or Adverse Action). Please feel free to look around, and ask any questions you wish, but perhaps do so in a preexisting thread, preferably in the Beginners section. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your Purim.

Because you're 18 doesn't mean you need a CC.

Why do you feel you need a credit card? What's your goal? Do you have any income that can pay off bills that will be accumulated?

It is not a bad idea to start building credit when you do not yet need it, to have in place for when you do need it.

Why is building credit a bad thing? Sounds like you had some debt when you were that age ;) ;)

It might be a very bad idea if you end up building debt instead of a credit score, which happens way more often than people tend to admit here, and despite people's best intentions. With the majority in this forum (understandably) gung ho about opening as many credit cards as possible, it's good to have at least one person temper that with some real life talk.
.
OP, here is a taste of what we're referring to. Please be careful. Only use credit cards when you're using them as cash.

I opened my first card at age 18, and I was a few thousand dollars in debt within a year or two. It took me a few years to get out of it, and to really internalize that when people say credit cards are dangerous and can ruin you financially, it's not just preaching or hyperbole, but it applies to every single person, even me.

BH I've learned some more discipline since and can now use a credit card in a positive way, but unless people realize and deal with the risks, I'd say don't jump to get a credit card on your 18th birthday. The "good credit" is not worth the tradeoff IMO.

ETA: Just saw Yehuda57's last post, and he hit the nail on the head.

I disagree. If you池e very disciplined, 18 is the best time to start. I started at 18 and the only reason I have an 810 credit score and few 100 thousand dollars in credit limit is because I got in 5 years ago at 18.

I also thought I was very disciplined. And I was in other matters. It may have worked out for you, but for many it wont.

I'm not saying that he should absolutely not get a CC at 18. I'm just saying to be aware. Perhaps put in safeguards. Never spend more than $5 on it maybe. That builds credit without the risk.

nope. I had it later when real life kicked in.  ;) At that age it also sounded nice n dandy that I became and adult and must have a Credit card. I built credit for years, played the game, went on vacations until one sour day...

Credit cards aren't always bad. But you must be educated with the risks. I find most people that I speak to don't even pause a second to understand the risks.
