nope. I had it later when real life kicked in.  ;) At that age it also sounded nice n dandy that I became and adult and must have a Credit card. I built credit for years, played the game, went on vacations until one sour day...

Credit cards aren't always bad. But you must be educated with the risks. I find most people that I speak to don't even pause a second to understand the risks.
very discipline at 18?  LOL
Yes, very disciplined. What kind of 18 year old were you?
I think it really depends on whether or not Daddy is paying the bill, if yes you lose the discipline aspect, unless he is on top of you, about the spending you did ( on the plus side hopefully he will keep you out of debt) if you are paying that can teach discipline when you realize how much of a bill “just a few swipes” can run you up, on the flip side it is difficult for someone who never had real responsibility to practice discipline. I saw way to many of my friends at the 18-22 age stuck in cc debt. An idea may be to sign up for a cc and give it to your parents/friends/relatives to swipe a minimal amount on it every month, that should build your credit (much more important than points in the long run) while mitigating the risk. It is imperative for this plan to work that they, not you, physically hold the card. Hatzlacha

I’ll be 18 next month, I’m looking to build up points and all.
Any suggestions what’s the best credit cards to start with?
Thank you all for your thoughts 💭.
I think I’m pretty good with my credit cards I am a user on a couple of cards so I’m not just stating the game now, well actually I’m starting my own game now.
I’m looking to build points by spending money that I’ll get back like an example would be buying for buying groups so you get paid back and sometimes even a commission and you get point, you can only go wrong if you don’t know how to budget.

Because you're 18 doesn't mean you need a CC.

Why do you feel you need a credit card? What's your goal? Do you have any income that can pay off bills that will be accumulated?
You sound like your that guy that is scared that you don’t know how to budget to you only swipe your debit card

example would be buying for buying groups

you can only go wrong if you don’t know how to budget.
You do realize that buying groups come in many forms, and people have ended up with tens of thousands of dollars of credit card debt when their group went bust and couldn't pay?

You sound like your that guy that is scared that you don’t know how to budget to you only swipe your debit card

you can only go wrong if you don’t know how to budget.

You can also go wrong if you are too arrogant to heed others' advice, people who have years of experience and went through the exact process you are going through. No one is telling CCs are definitely not for you, people are warning you to be careful. If you take the warning and move ahead with caution, more power to you. But mocking the people who are helping you shows you aren't thinking as clearly as you think you are, and you are the very person who needs to heed the warning most.

I’m not mocking anyone just the way he made it sound was like you don’t belong getting any cards…

Don’t get the discover because you don’t want to be stuck later on with useless points. Get the cap1 journey which can eventually be PC to a miles card.

Also they’ll probably only give you a CL of $500 so you won’t get heavily into buying groups or debt :)

He's a normal person just like you. And his story isn't unique. His point is that it's easy for any normal person, who, under normal circumstances, can easily manage the credit card "game," to get into very serious trouble playing these "games." Including buying groups in your low-risk plan for accumulating points is already a red flag.

You were absolutely mocking him, and if you take a peek around the forum, including the thread I linked to in my first post on this thread, you'll see that he is one of the more vocal and knowledgeable members on the topic of budgeting. I don't think you know what budgeting means if you think it has anything at all to do with buying groups.

Yup, I can’t speak for the OP but your average 18 year old who shows up and says “I got this under control” is exhibiting hubris. What people here are trying to tell the OP is, have a little bit of humility, learn from the mistakes of others, and proceed slowly, or you might bite off more than you can chew.

IMHO the biggest bump to building credit will be having multiple utilized cards with low utilization and bills paid on time for years. The size of the the CL isn’t important, and the size of the spend is even less important.

If your intent is to build credit, buy a Snapple or metro card on credit, and stay away from buying groups.

My first CC was a BofA travel rewards card and I barely used it (didnt even get the sign up bonus :( ), I already had a BofA checking account so it was simpler. But at some point you will, im guessing, probably want a card that offers primary rental car insurance so maybe just start with that.
[No I didnt budget or go into debt and I used it for basic spending]

I’ll be focused: Get every card you can get your hands on, but don’t come crying to us when you’re up to your neck in CC debt and/or get shafted by a buying group or two…
