Fast Food Drink Prices
« on: June 28, 2022, 05:53:21 PM »
Why is it that some restaurants feel the need to charge upwards of $2 for a can of Coke?

I understand chicken went up but Coke is still under 50˘ at Walmart, Sam's Club etc.

Short answer: because they can (pun is a happy accident).

Slightly more technical answer: Refrigeration costs money, space costs money, time and gas cost money (sourcing product), and convenience costs money.

Why do people pay upwards of $2 for a can of Coke when they can get it for $.50 at Walmart, Sam's, etc.?

They can use the links I posted.

Many time the refrigerators are free when ordering directly from Coke.

They can't buy a single Coke, or get it cold, or get it immediately through those links.

And Coke may supply the fridge, but they don't pay for the electricity or the space.

Ironically, a local Lakewood pizza store proprietor just told me today that he charges $1.75 for a can but he has to go up because his costs went up a lot recently.

$2 for a can of Coke at a Pizza shop is reasonable. I was recently charged $5 for a can of water (!!) at the NY Aquarium, non-profit my @$$. Meanwhile the water fountains are not operational “due to COVID”. Talk about a captive audience.

Well, at an aquarium, I could understand why water would be a very important commodity...  :P

I was at a pizza shop OOT that's just open for the summer.
Went there Friday a can was $1 flat, went there Motzia Shabbos and a can was $1.75, and after buying a pie (which they also raised the price since Friday) I tried to buy the can with the $1.72, which I had leftover as change, and the guy wasn't going to sell it to me, till his co worker told him it's fine.

Very likely, the store started with last year's pricing, until they saw their invoices with the new costs. As for the employee not giving in on the $.03, he's an employee... it's not his money. Unless he has direct instructions to be lax about getting the exact amount, he's just doing his job. Nothing to do with menchlechkite.

Why does the supermarket charge $2.50 for a cold 16oz and $2 for a 2 liter bottle?

Cause it’s a different target customer. A guy will pay $2.50 for a cold 16 oz. coke when he’s thirsty. He’s not going to buy a warm 2 liter bottle and drink from that. Even if it’s free.

It’s usually not because it costs them so much. The drinks in a fast food store is one of the main moneymakers. Google around and you’ll see endless articles about this. (About Mc Donald’s and the like, but it applies to some extent to your local fast food and pizza shop too).
So if everything is going up they’re going to raise the price on the drinks too.
