It’s usually not because it costs them so much. The drinks in a fast food store is one of the main moneymakers. Google around and you’ll see endless articles about this. (About Mc Donald’s and the like, but it applies to some extent to your local fast food and pizza shop too).
So if everything is going up they’re going to raise the price on the drinks too.
The same reason you can buy an airplane ticket for $29 an pay $50 for a carryon bag

This was after paying $23 for a Shnitzel sandwich.

Both are examples of a secondary cost that’s disproportionately priced, but not for the same reason as a soda at a fast food place.

$1.75 for a can of brand name soda at a place that charges $23 for a schnitzel sandwich is very reasonable.

The $1.75 was a pizza shop in PA. The $23 schnitzel sandwich was no better then the $15 ones I used to get from Ess & Bench. (Are they still around?)

At some point you chose to conflate the two. Anyone reading close enough should have asked why you bought a chicken sandwich at a pizza shop…

In any case $1.75 for a can of soda is very reasonable at a kosher pizza shop, especially in PA where I assume there’s less competition for pizza shops than Lakewood, Monsey, or NYC.

It was water sold in a can. Likely cheaper than a bottle, and you sell more because it isn’t resealable for further consumption later. Hope this money grab doesn’t become mainstream.

That article will give you insight. But I would imagine it’s a little more than just the extra cost basis. It’s more of a luxury item than a necessity such as a regular coffee, so they can upcharge.
