A while ago I sent a tallis for dry cleaning. It came back with a scent of laundry detergent. Being very sensitive to odors, I couldn't use it. It seemed like the dry cleaners just put it through a regular laundry cycle. In any event, it was never put back in service.
I recently gave a tallis to a different dry cleaners, and it came back with some fruity scent. Again, not usable. I took it back to the cleaners, and was told that they recently started using scented cleaning solution in response to people asking them to do more to get rid of sweat odors. They claimed to have been getting positive feedback. My feedback was the first negative. They took it for a do over. I went today to pick it up, but there were still remnants of a fruity scent. Furthermore, it looked like it was through a regular wash as the wool seemed to have some wrinkles. When I inquired about it they said that it's a technology that has been in place for a while, where they use water rather than chemicals, saying that garments come out cleaner.
Has anyone had similar experience? Is good old dry cleaning no longer available?
