Do you send your טלית for dry cleaning?
« on: June 28, 2022, 09:27:11 PM »
A while ago I sent a tallis for dry cleaning. It came back with a scent of laundry detergent. Being very sensitive to odors, I couldn't use it. It seemed like the dry cleaners just put it through a regular laundry cycle. In any event, it was never put back in service.

I recently gave a tallis to a different dry cleaners, and it came back with some fruity scent. Again, not usable. I took it back to the cleaners, and was told that they recently started using scented cleaning solution in response to people asking them to do more to get rid of sweat odors. They claimed to have been getting positive feedback. My feedback was the first negative. They took it for a do over. I went today to pick it up, but there were still remnants of a fruity scent. Furthermore, it looked like it was through a regular wash as the wool seemed to have some wrinkles. When I inquired about it they said that it's a technology that has been in place for a while, where they use water rather than chemicals, saying that garments come out cleaner.

Has anyone had similar experience? Is good old dry cleaning no longer available?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Maybe the used detergent without water, hence the lingering smell

Was hoping to see some tips on best way to clean a wool talis katan too but probably won't get any, as the majority wool talis katan wearers here are Lubavitchers who keep it under the shirt and therefore doesn't get really stained :)

Let it air out for a few days. Had same experience didn’t use mine for little while but it wears off. I also find that after dry cleaning it get very yellow..

I can give you a great recipe but for oil stains it’s doesn’t always work.

I figured that I could let it air out. But I got really annoyed at the cleaners using a scented cleaning solution. Not what I wanted or expected. I wonder why they would consider it a good business move? People have different tastes, do they really think everyone likes the scent they chose?

They use water, but identify as dry!

But how does water self-identify and what are its pronouns?

Oh, it gets stained.

Also, sometimes Lubavtichers wear it over an undershirt and that’s it (no shirt on top of that) :P

Good thing you used that term (as opposed to Chabadniks) in this context, as my FIL obm would often be seen that way (and the style carried over to his sons).

Inquiry has been submitted, will report back as soon as we hear back from the water.

I think I gave in my Tallis twice and the wool shrinks at a different rate than the silk so the silk gets passed with folded over creases and eventually starts to tear.

The only time it's worth dry cleaning a Tallis is when it's more yellow than the Tallis of the guy who just dry cleaned his.

It's not about the color it's about the odor. At some point there's just too much sweat in it. Also I'd take yellow over black.

I had used a dry cleaning place for years.
It always turns a bit yellow with every clean.

Recently my son recommended a boutique talis cleaning place in BP.

He charged $40 but actually did a phenomenal job.
