the good news about this line is, after they weigh your bag and tag it, you can add 100 more pounds (on the way to the duffle bag line) before you check it in.

as per my post above, I just traveled with 9 duffel bags of varying shapes, sizes and colors. checked all in normally with no issue at all. guy next to me did the same

basically you bring your 70 lb bag to check in they weigh it and tag it, then on the way to the "we hate all you bachurim bringing duffles" line, you empty all your heavy sforim from your carryons into the duffle, cuz they don't weigh it again

Nothing to do with being ripped off. On the contrary - the cost of authorized taxis at the stand is quite the rip-off. Instead, it has to do with safety.
Don't get worked up with English language signage in IL or you'll be aggravated all day. (I'm an editor, so I'm hard-wired to notice these things...)

It's no different from any other airport. there are automated anouncments in JFK sayin the same thing.
The reasons are split between tourist protection and $$ for the airport.
1) Authorised Taxis pay a fee to the airport.
2) Tourists have no idea what the going rate should be, amd what a taxi looks like...
3) comparing the official price to jlm and and the blackmarket price is not really fair. the prices are based on a model in which the next driver must take the next passanger basicaly wherever he wants in the country, with no hope of a return fare, so all fares fit the model. the BM JLM fares are usually taxis who took people to the airport...or the availability of a return to the merkaz is likely.

Don't the regulated taxis have to turn on the meter or charge a set price? Don't tourists who use the official taxis get notified about pricing?

There are lots of threads I don't follow... apologies. And welcome!
The set price is what we are discussing, and it is at least 280. Plus I've been quoted 400. So I don't know what gives. But ordering a taxi from a legit company in advance is much cheaper, there's no need to go black market. Even if it is against the rules, it is still an official taxi from an official company. You get 180 to 220 quoted in advance. (At least last time it was nogea to me.)
