Shabbos Takeout Stores Throwing Away Food

Tried going to Goldy's as well up the block, but while they let me into the store at 3pm, they wouldn't let me buy any prepared foods as they were closing. They insisted on throwing everything they had into the garbage, but they sold me a container of chatzilim that was very good...

I dont get when stores are like that, rather throw it in the garbage then help someone get shabbos food, and make a buck as well

Yup, beyond frustrating. And they were just tossing obscene quantities of food.
I didn't pull a DYKWIA as we had sufficient food from HG and I was just going to try a couple dishes for their own benefit...

Better question, why don't these places donate the extra food? Was enough to serve hundreds.

That's unreal.

In my day even leftovers from the American Arzei/Machal/Mala Dafna shabbos meals would be picked up by a guy called the "Leftover Guy".

He would feed dozens of hungry yeshiva guys the rest of the week with it.

Two guesses:

1. We are on the cusp of ימות המשיח and hence מעדנים מצויים כעפר.
2. KYC - maybe they have past experience that makes them decide that it's better to discard.

Gourmet Glatt in Lakewood gives the leftovers away and they get distributed shortly before shabbos each week. Tons of other stuff goes to the BMG coffee room each day

Other stores as well. There is a group that goes around and picks up loads of challa and take out food. Its available for pickup shortly before shabbos in at least one location that I am aware of.

There is an organization in Monsey called Shearis Ha-plate, that brings leftover food to Yeshivos.
There is also a mashgiach for JSOR who brings Deal leftovers to Yeshivos.

I heard from a Mashigach who witnesses in one week the throwing out of MILLIONS of dollars worth of food (he does top-notch simchas) that he knows of big caterer that used to give over all extra food to a certain moisad, until one time they got sued from that very same moisad for food poisoning.. since then they throw everything out.

In Borough Park there are organizations that pick up food from multiple stores in the area and its bought to a location were people come before Shabbos to get food. I know gourmet glatt and Breadberry do 50% off takeout 1/2 hour before closing to minimize leftovers.

Its always sad to see trays of food being thrown out especially when we all know poeple in the community that can use it.

There’s a local takeout here in Crown Heights that apparently brings (some?) leftovers to 770 every Friday for people to enjoy. I was there one Friday before closing and bought myself cholent for lunch, and another customer there asked me why I’m paying when I can go to 770 soon and get the same cholent for free

There are laws involved here also. I know for catered affairs any food that leaves the kitchen has to be thrown out. Michael Schick has an organization that gives out food that remained in the kitchen

Our Founder

In 2013, Shimon Charach and Yossi Katz noticed that unfortunately there are families in Brooklyn that are struggling so much that they cannot afford the basic ingredients to prepare wholesome meals for their families. At the same time, the local delis and take-out stores, as well as simcha halls, were throwing out perfectly fresh food that has been left over. He hit upon an ingenious idea. Singlehandedly, he would pick up the leftover food from these local stores and simcha halls, repackage them in pans and containers and deliver it to these struggling families. The food was delivered  in boxes from local supermarkets, thus ensuring the families’ dignity remained intact. The demand grew so much, that within a few short months it burgeoned into a full fledged chessed operation, with numerous volunteers involved in various aspects of the organization.
