If you act with respect, you will get respect.

1.)If you convince the checkout person, that your important, they will treat you like it.
I was flying from JFK to France. I convinced the laidy that I am a tour organizer and I was very tired.
Then told her an upgrade to all seat flat business class upgrade would really be nice. It worked.

2.) Tell the checkout person, that the first leg of your flight was horrible. There was this huge man sitting next to you and you couldnt sleep! Make them have Rachmonos on you, and it could work. Did for me.

3.) Just walk up to the gate and ask if there are any empty first class seats. Tell them it would really be nice to have one. Did that from atlanta to ny.

These are all person to person tactics, which can work, if you do it right. Remember to do these tactics with a huge smile.

you could also tell them youre on your honeymoon worked for me from ny to london on ba!

Or the more traditional route:
The domestic Skyteam airlines give free upgrades for all elites.
AA gives free upgrades to top-tier EXP's only.

It is, but only in non-businessfirst markets.

you can forget about getting it for free it will cost you 700 matmid points and you have to upgrade before you get to the airport

the going rate on matmid points is 50 cents/point - if you find someone willing to sell to you

Yes it's nice to fly business or first but it's better to be honest. No need to lie to get upgraded.

who said anything about lying? i was on my honeymoon a month after my wedding! so im just advising that in case you go on vacation in close proximity to your wedding tell them that and theyll usually hook you up

As a United elite you always get upgraded...it's called economy plus.
For the real upgrade you'll have to buy mileage upgrades for cash or miles.
